Othello is a Moorish general in the service of Venice.
Othello's ensign Iago is ambitious and when Othello
promotes Cassio, Iago seeks revenge. Othello elopes
with Desdemona, daughter of Senator Brabantio and
Iago asks Roderigo, a former suitor of Desdemona,
to inform the senator. Othello is sent to Cyprus
and becomes governor. Unaware that Iago was behind
Brabantio's protests at their marriage, Othello
orders Iago to accompany Desdemona. Iago discredits
Cassio, who is fired and sows discord between Othello
and Desdemona. Othello is recalled to Venice and
Cassio named as the new governor. When Desdemona
praises Cassio, Othello strikes her and his jealousy
subsequently leads him to murder her. When Othello
learns, from Iago's wife Emilia, how he has been
deceived, he wounds Iago and then kills himself.
After killing Emilia, Iago is arrested.
