Caius Martius is a wealthy man, hated because a
shortage of corn has caused the citizens of Rome
to rebel against the senate. Caius Martius is awarded
the title 'Coriolanus' after he bravely defeats
the Volscians. Volscian general, Tullus Aufidius
vows to avenge the defeat. In Rome Coriolanus is
persuaded to seek consulship, but his bad temper
turns the citizens against him and he is banished
from Rome. In Actium Coriolanus meets his enemy
Tullus Aufidius and offers him his life as victim
or general. Inspite of Coriolanus's arrogance Tullus
Aufidius tells him to lead half of the Volscan army.
Together they attach Rome. At the city gates Coriolanus
is persuaded, by friends and his mother, to negotiate
a peace. Coriolanus returns to the Volscians. Before
the Volscian senate, he is accused of treason by
Tullus Aufidius, who is stabbed to death.
