Mark Antony ruler of the eastern Roman Empire, is
having an affair with Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt.
Following the death of Antony's wife Fulvia and
Pompeii's threats of war, Antony returns to Rome.
Octavius believes that the relationship between
Antony and Cleopatra could weaken Rome. To calm
his friends fears, Antony marries Octavia, the sister
of Octavius. When Octavia becomes Caesar, the rift
between Octavius and Antony grows. When Antony returns
to Cleopatra, Caesar seeks revenge against Antony
for his sister's dishonor. This results in a sea
battle between their forces, where Antony is defeated.
Caesar offers immunity to Cleopatra, if she agrees
to kill Mark Antony, but she refuses to. Another
battle on land sees Antony victorious, but when
his Egyptian allies retreat Caesar wins. Antony
accuses Cleopatra of betraying him and threatens
to kill her. Cleopatra orders her servants to tell
Antony that she has killed herself. Distraught,
Antony falls on his own sword and dying is taken
to her side. Cleopatra kills herself by allowing
snakes to bite her. Caesar orders that Antony and
Cleopatra are buried together.
