The rebellion of Arthur, nephew of King John, is
supported by the French King. John refuses to renounce
the throne and sends an army to France. English
and French armies fight but without a clear winner.
John wants peace but the Pope excommunicates him
and supports a continued French war against King
John. King John's army holds back the French and
Arthur is captured and dies, causing his nobles
to switch their support to the French. A dying French
noble tells the English nobles who betrayed John
that the French King will execute them after King
John is defeated. The English return their support
to King John. The French king, the Pope and King
John agree a deal. King John is assassinated and
his son becomes King Henry III.
