The Duke of Athens is soon to be married. A play
is planned in honour of the Duke, and rehearsed
secretly at night in a wood. Two couples are eloping.
King of the wood Oberon disagrees with his wife
Queen Titania. Puck, Oberon's messenger, gives Bottom
the weaver, an asses head. Oberon casts a spell,
so that Titania falls in love with the first person
she sees upon awaking, who is Bottom. A spell meant
for a pair of lovers in the wood is cast upon the
wrong man. By the end of the play the spells have
been removed and each of the lovers marries their
correct partner.
