Bassanio loves the wealthy lady Portia. The merchant
Antonio is hated by Shylock. Shylock loans money
to Bassanio, with Antonio providing security which
will cost him a pound of flesh if the loan is not
repaid in time. Portia's father tests her suitors
by offering them a gold, silver and lead box to
choose from. Bassanio wins Portia by choosing the
lead box. Antonio's ships are delayed and payment
to Shylock is not made by the agreed date. Disguised
as a lawyer, Portia defends Antonio and asks Shylock
to show Antonio mercy. Shylock continues to demand
the pound of flesh. Portia accuses Shylock of wanting
Antonio's death and Shylock asks for the mercy that
he refused Antonio.
