Whilst away from town, the Duke of Vienna transfers
his powers and duties to Angelo, knowing that Angelo
will face the unpopularity of strengthening the
laws against sex outside marriage. Claudio is arrested
for impregnating his fiance Madam Julietta and sentenced
to death. Claudio's sister Isabella, who has become
a nun, begs Angelo to show her brother mercy. Angelo
agrees but only if Isabella will sleep with him.
Isabella tells Claudio what Angelo has said and
her brother asks her to follow Angelo's request
as he fears death, but she refuses. Disguised as
a monk, the Duke has overheard what has been said
and tells Isabella of a plan to save Claudio. Disguised,
the Duke is able to observe others activities and
hear their comments about him. When the Duke returns
to the city as himself, Isabella tells him what
has happened. The Duke initially pretends to not
believe Isabella, but as his plan unfolds the wrong
doers are punished and Claudio and Isabella are
reunited.
